Kathmandu July 20 : The police have detained four people who were travelling to Dubai from the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu with foreign currency totaling over 120 million Nepalese rupees, including different denominations from several nations. While boarding a Himalaya Airlines flight to Dubai on Wednesday night, Santosh Panthi, Dipesh Rana, Suryamani Bhandari, and Anish Thapa were apprehended by authorities. Over 162 thousand units of foreign currency were discovered in their possession.
According to police sources, the confiscated currency includes around 4,140,000 dollars, 1,195,000 Saudi riyals, 13,000 rials from Oman, and 488 dinars from Bahrain.
The authorities are concerned about a group engaged in cash smuggling and their connections to illegal currency traders. The four Nepali people who were arrested may have served as the group’s carriers, according to police sources. They believe that these people might also have been involved in illicit monetary transactions.
Within just two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Revenue Investigation Department had taken nearly one quintal of gold seized from Hong Kong. The airport’s lax security measures and the cooperation of its staff have made it simpler for crimes like the smuggling of gold and foreign currency to be committed.
