New Coronavirus variants KP.1 and KP.2 confirmed in Nepal

Kathmandu, May 24: New Coronavirus sub-variants KP.1 and KP.2 have been confirmed in Nepal.

The spokesperson at the Minister of Health and Population Dr Prakash Budhathoki has informed that a new sub-variant of Omicron KP.1 and KP.2 has been confirmed after the genome sequencing at the National Public Health Laboratory.

Dr Budhathoki said that new sub-variants are not harmful. He said, “New sub-variants of Omicron KP.1 and KP.2 have been found. But as these variants cause normal flu as usual nobody needs to panic.”

The laboratory confirmed various sub-varients in 42 per cent of 40-genome sequencing a few months before. 

According to the findings, Omicron’s JN1 was found in seven, Omicron B2 was found in two, KP.1 was found in 12, KP.2 was found in 17 and KP4 was found in one sample.

These variants were found in Singapore, America and African continents countries earlier too.
