Paris: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued its decision on the emergency remedies sought by South Africa in its genocide complaint against Israel over its war in the Gaza Strip.
The court stated, among other things, that Israel must take action to avert genocide in Gaza, but did not mandate a cease-fire.
The judges have not ruled on the merits of the genocide charges, which might take years to resolve.
According to Gaza officials, Israel’s military operation has killed at least 26,083 individuals and injured 64,487 more since October 7. Thousands more are missing under the rubble, with the majority feared dead.

First response from the Palestinian foreign ministry

In a statement, the ministry said it welcomed the ICJ’s decisions, describing them as an “important reminder” that no state is above the law.

The court claims it has jurisdiction to rule on the case.
The court requires Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip and to report back in one month.
According to the court, Israel must prevent and punish incitement to genocide in the Strip.
The court orders Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the Strip.
The court orders Israel to take additional precautions to protect Palestinians, but it does not force it to cease military operations in the Strip.
