Kathmandu July 13 : Both neighboring countries’s ruling parties have been engaging in intense exchanges and discussions with political parties to establish friendly relations.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a delay in exchanges and discussions between the political parties of Nepal and the Communist Party of China (CPC). Efforts are also being made to expand party relations between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in southern India and the parties here.
During a recent visit between the two countries, the CPC team arrived in Nepal only on Wednesday from Beijing. The CPC’s Foreign Department team has planned programs with Nepali political parties (especially communist parties), think tanks, institutions, and journalists in Bhaktapur. An official with knowledge has informed that the team will discuss China’s development and prosperity in Kathmandu with the Nepali side on Thursday. The team is also preparing for a high-level visit to Nepal from the CPC upon their return.
CPC central committee Politburo member Yuan Jiajun, who is leading a delegation of representatives from the city of Chongqing, informed that they will arrive on July 7. Yuan is the secretary of the CPC Chongqing City Committee.

On the other hand, leaders of Nepal’s ruling party, the Maoists, are preparing to visit New Delhi at the invitation of the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to a Maoist leader, a team from the party has already gone to New Delhi at the invitation of BJP President JP Nadda and is currently engaged in discussions. The date of the visit has not been finalized. Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachnada had visited India for three days on last year, at the invitation of BJP President Nadda. Prachanda had mentioned about his visit being focused on party relations between the BJP and the Maoists as well as the relationship between the two countries. Prime Minister Prachanda, during his official visit to India in the month of May–June, had made a comment saying that he wore traditional attire and performed a ritual at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh also .

Besides meeting different party leaders, the Chinese delegation is likely to invite Nepal’s participation in the “Belt and Road (Chongqing) International Consumer Goods Expo” co-hosted by the Supply and Marketing Cooperation Industry Branch of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the China Cooperation Times. The event is scheduled to be held at the Chongqing International Expo Center from September 22 to 24.
Former Prime Minister and Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba visited the BJP party office in New Delhi during his official visit to India in 2021. At the same time, Pampa Bhushal, who was then the Minister of Energy of the Maoist party, also visited the BJP office to establish a cordial relationship between the parties. Vijay Chauthaiwale, head of the BJP’s Foreign Department, has been continuously visiting Nepal for the past three years. However, he has met with the major leaders of the Congress, CPN (Maoist), and UML on each visit to Nepal.
The Communist Party of Nepal China(CPC) has had cooperation with communist parties in Nepal since the 1950s, but after the establishment of democracy in Nepal, party relations were given priority. In the 2017 elections, the CPC openly played a role in bringing together the UML and the Maoists to form the Nepal Communist Party. During the time when the relationship between the the NCP and the CPC was advancing in a cordial manner, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Nepal. After the split of the NCP, the CPC returned to its old state and then cooperated with other parties, including the Nepali Congress.
Several Nepali leaders and officials have visited China after Beijing lifted its Covid restrictions in early 2023. From Chairman of the National Assembly Ganesh Timilsina to former Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, several politicians, members of Parliament and government officials have visited China in the past six months.
