Kathmandu July 7 : The Supreme Court has granted permission to the Indian company GMR to continue investing in the Upper Karnali Hydroelectric Project, with an additional two-year timeframe, until Magh 2081 BS. The Supreme Court’s decision is final and marks the end of the time given to GMR. The complete text of the decision was made public on 24th Baisakh and confirms the two-year deadline given to GMR by the Supreme Court.

In a cabinet meeting held on 31st Asar 2079, the decision was made to allow GMR to continue investing in the Upper Karnali until Srawan month 2081. Despite the government extending the deadline as per the court’s decision, the subject of interpretation by the court has not been addressed.

The decision states, “In the complete verdict, it is not mentioned that the extension of the deadline for the development agreement and financial management of the Upper Karnali project contradicts the constitution or the law, nor has it been seen that the petitioners’ demand for submission and the issuance of an order of mandate has been fulfilled.”

Although the Supreme Court reached an agreement nearly ten years ago, GMR was unable to manage the financial aspects, which is why it is deemed inappropriate to further delay the project.
