US engaging with Russia “back channel diplomacy” to end Ukraine crisis

Kathmandu July 7 : The United States is engaged in secret talks with Russia through “backdoor diplomacy” to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing for a year. This revelation has come to light.

According to a report, the United States has initiated talks with Russia through “backchannel diplomacy” to bring an end to this war. These secret talks began in April and are still ongoing. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is participating in these “backdoor” discussions. They involve discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the head of American intelligence.

Furthermore, according to a report, on June 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin disappeared to a secret location underground in Moscow after the Wagner private army increased in strength.

According to the American news channel NBC, the United States initiated “high-level backchannel diplomacy” to de-escalate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in April. It is referred to as ‘Track 2’ diplomacy. Foreign Minister Lavrov was in New York for talks with US authorities. He had discussions with senior American diplomats.

Leading American diplomat Richard Haass was involved in the talks from the American side. He is the President of the Council on Foreign Relations. Besides him, European affairs expert Charles Kupchan and Russian affairs expert Thomas Graham were also participants. They were accommodated at the White House and the State Department. According to reports, these discussions are still ongoing.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is participating in the “backdoor” talks. Other diplomats are also involved, but their details have not been revealed.

According to reports, during the April talks, serious issues were discussed. At that time, the seizure of Ukrainian land by Russia was the main topic of discussion. The issue of whether to declare the occupied land as an independent territory or bring it under Russian control was also discussed. The transfer of captured soldiers to another country was also a topic of discussion. It is speculated that Putin and Zelensky had direct discussions on this matter.

A few days ago, a report claimed that William Burns, the head of American intelligence, had visited Ukraine. There, he had extensive discussions with President Zelensky. Ukrainian intelligence service officials were also present during the meeting.

Afterward, Burns also had discussions with Sergei Naryshkin, the head of the Russian counterpart agency. In this context, Burns mentioned that there was no direct American involvement in the Wagner rebellion in Russia.

According to a report by Newsweek magazine, on June 24, when the Wagner group, a Russian private army, rebelled and moved troops towards Moscow, Putin left the Presidential Palace. This claim was made by former executive chief Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who is currently outside Russia.

The report cites Mikhail as saying that Putin left the Presidential Palace in a chartered ship. This flight was not shown on the flight data. Prior to this, Putin was claimed to have been hiding in the same bunker. According to the news, Putin and other government officials had also left Moscow.
